Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral & Emergency offers emergency and critical care services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. No appointment is necessary, and walk-ins are welcomed; however, we appreciate a call ahead of time in order to be thoroughly prepared for your pet. We also accept emergent referrals from your primary veterinarian for a wide variety of conditions, and transfer to specialists when indicated.
Upon presentation, your pet will immediately be evaluated by a highly-trained veterinary technician. The most critical patients will be seen by a veterinarian first. When you arrive, one of our technicians will take your pet in back to our ICU to obtain vital signs such as weight, temperature, and respiratory/heart rate among other things. During this time, one of our receptionists will ask you to fill out a Client Information form if we have not previously seen your pet. If your pet is critical, we may ask you to sign an emergency stabilization form allowing us to perform immediate life-saving treatment. After obtaining a complete history from you and performing a physical exam, the doctor will discuss further diagnostics, treatment and specialist consults if warranted. An estimate for the diagnostics and treatments will be provided to you. The high end of the estimate is required as a deposit if your pet is hospitalized. If your pet is critical and warrants a specialist consult immediately, the ER doctor and specialist will consult together. Our team of specialists and emergency clinicians work closely with one another to provide your pet the highest quality of care possible.
Some diseases require immediate surgery, therefore we typically have an emergency surgeon on call and are ready to perform necessary surgery. Logistics of the surgery will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
DCVR operates as an extension of your primary veterinarian. Whether your pet is treated on an in- or out-patient basis, your veterinarian is promptly notified of your pet’s condition and our treatment plan. We always remain in close contact with your veterinarian so that we can all provide the best care for your pet as well as devise appropriate recheck plans for your pet. If your pet is hospitalized, daily doctor updates will be provided to you regarding his/her progress, and you are welcome to call at any time, day or night, for an update provided by a technician. Visiting hours for hospitalized patients are from 12pm-8pm, but we ask that you call ahead and let us know when you would like to come in so we can make sure it’s an appropriate time with regards to your pet’s treatment schedule and overall condition. At your discharge appointment, we will thoroughly explain the recovery process and let you know what to expect as you care for your pet at home.
Our ICU is staffed by technicians and doctors 24 hours a day to ensure that your pet is receiving the best care and monitoring. Our ICU service provides excellent nursing care by our many licensed and experienced veterinary technicians. Patients from all departments may be kept in our intensive care unit when indicated. We provide specialized care including but not limited to:
- In-house lab work: CBC, chemistry panel, blood gas analysis, coagulation times, urinalysis, various SNAP tests, serial blood glucose using glucometers
- Oxygen supplementation
- ECG 24-hour telemetry
- Pulse oximetry
- Blood pressure monitoring
- Thermal support
- Digital radiography
- Ultrasound for quick procedures
- Diagnostic and therapeutic thoracocentesis/abdominocentesis
- Central venous line placement and urinary catheter placement when indicated
- Various types of IV fluids, IV fluid supplementation, hetastarch
- Various types of transfusions: whole blood, pRBCs, plasma
- Constant rate infusions (CRIs) using advanced syringe pumps
- Large variety of in-house pharmaceuticals
- 24-hour intensive nursing care
