Veterinary Specialty Care?
Is Never More Important Than When It's For Someone Very Special

Surgery

The surgical department at Dogs & Cats Veterinary Referral has been up and running since November 2004. There has been a tremendous effort to outfit the surgical preparatory area, the surgical suite, instrumentation and the monitoring devices with state of the art equipment. We have dedicated full time veterinary technicians to help with the care of our patients. Our technicians are trained in the monitoring of anesthesia so we can provide a safe surgical environment to your pet.

The surgery department is headed by Dr. Eileen Snakard. Dr. Snakard joined our team in April 2007. She is an experienced surgeon in all areas of surgery including soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Snakard also has an interest and advanced training in minimally invasive surgery. Laparoscopy and Thoracoscopy are routinely performed in our practice.

During the office visit, Dr. Snakard will discuss with you the best diagnostic and therapeutic options for your pet. You can expect in most cases to leave your pet with us for a few hours or the rest of the day. If more convenient for you, a future date can be scheduled to perform the diagnostics recommended.

If your pet requires surgery, Dr. Snakard will provide you with an explanation of the procedure, risks involved and expected outcome (prognosis). Typically you should expect an average of 2 days of post-operative care at our hospital, but off course each individual case is different and recovery time may be faster or slower. While in the hospital, you will receive daily updates about your pet's progress.

Dr. Snakard has many interests in surgery. She has a special interest in thoracic surgery. Since starting at DCVR she has performed successfully many lung and cardiovascular surgeries. Fracture repair is another strong interest. Our hospital is equipped with all the equipment needed to successfully repair fractures.

Dr. Snakard has also had the opportunity and interest over the years to operate on exotic species. Recently she has performed surgery in a turtle with a broken jaw from the the Baltimore Aquarium.

Because we work with a team of veterinary specialists, when needed we can closely consult with other specialists in the areas of cardiology, neurology and surgery to offer you a complete solution.
